Preventing Injury with a Sports Mouthguard

Preventing Injury with a Sports Mouthguard

Sports will begin soon in Grand Rapids which means over 30 million of high school and pre-high school kids will participate in competitive sports. With so many participants it is not surprising that many will sustain some type of injury. It has been reported that of all injuries sustained, almost 20% will involve the area of the mouth.

Dental injuries will be the most common according to the National Youth Sports Foundation. The report shows that the young athlete will be 60 times more likely to sustain the damage when not wearing a protective mouthguard. These injuries can result in permanent damage to the teeth and oral tissue.

At our dental office, Daniel Burton DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we are concerned about the health of all of our young athletes and encourage them to wear a good fitting sports mouthguard no matter what sport they are involved in. Only your dentist can construct a properly fitting sports mouthguard that will ensure the maximum protection.

You can prevent injuries such as fractured teeth, torn tissue and even concussions, by use of a good fitting sports mouthguard. Mouthguards can vary both in price and quality. The most effective guard should be comfortable, fit properly, be tear resistant and easily cleaned. It should not interfere with breathing or speech.

It is important to know that damaged teeth do not grow back, that is why parents should invest in a custom mouthguard for their young athlete for maximum protection of their mouth.
